Safflower Oil
So
What Is Safflower?
Safflower (Carthamus tinctorious L.) is an annual oilseed crop adapted primarily to the cereal grain areas of the world. Safflower provides three principle products: oil, meal, and birdseed. Safflower oil is used by both food producers and by industry. There are two types of safflower oil with corresponding types of safflower varieties: those high in monounsaturated fatty acid (oleic) and those high in polyunsaturated fatty acid (linoleic).
Currently the predominant oil market is for those varieties that produce seed high in oleic acid and very low in saturated fatty acids. High oleic safflower oil is lower in saturates and higher in monounsaturates than olive oil. High oleic oil is a beneficial agent in the prevention of coronary artery disease. Oil from this type of safflower is used as a heat stable cooking oil to fry such food items as french fries, chips and other snack items and is also used in cosmetics, food coatings, and infant food formulations. High linoleic safflower oil is also used in human nutrition, but in recent years market demand has drastically shifted from the traditional high linoleic oils to high oleic oil.
Benefits
of Safflower Oil.
The human body
cannot function properly without two Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) - linoleic
and alpha-linolenic acid. These EFA's, which are found in Flax seed Oil
are essential to normal cell growth and function. These EFA's found in
Omega 3 oils such as Flax Oil have been extensively studied for their
beneficial effects on the human body.
Current nutrition
research continues to identify various substances in foods that appear
to act as protectors against chronic illnesses like cardiovascular disease
and cancer.
Although about
41 per cent of flax seed is oil, very little of that is saturated. More
than 70 per cent of fat in flaxseed is of the healthful polyunsaturated
type. In fact, a unique feature of flax seed is the high ratio of alpha-linolenic
acid (an omega
3 fatty acid) to linoleic (omega 6 fatty acids).
