Regenerative farming practices - getting the balance right

Our partner farm minimises soil disturbance by using a disc seeder and harvesting with a stripper front, leaving tall standing stubble in the paddocks. This approach helps maintain soil structure and health. The farm selects inputs that provide a wide range of mineral nutrients to plants in a plant-available manner, ensuring robust growth and resilience.

On farm-brewed biofertilisers

To further enhance soil and plant health, the farm brews its own biofertilisers. These are added via liquid injection at sowing and as foliar sprays during the growing stages. Synthetic fertilisers, when used, are complexed with humic substances to increase their availability and stability in the soil.

Precision monitoring and minimal chemical use

Plant growth and health are closely monitored using sap tests, which help determine the precise biofertiliser blend needed for foliar sprays. The farm rarely uses fungicides or insecticides, as healthy plants are naturally more resistant to pests and diseases. Herbicides are buffered with fulvic acid and vermiliquid to reduce the quantity needed, making their use more efficient. They avoid synthetic nitrogen, opting instead to brew fish hydrolysate amino acids, further reducing their environmental footprint.

Supporting sustainable agriculture

By choosing our locally produced flaxseed, you’re not only supporting sustainable farming practices and Australian owned and run business and their communities, but also helping to reduce carbon emissions and food miles, ensuring a fresher product with a smaller environmental footprint. And of course not to forget, you’re supporting your health thanks to the proven benefits of flax!

A message from Brian and Carol

Flax Crip in north-west Victoria

We farm in a regenerative way by minimising soil disturbance by using a disc seeder and harvesting using a stripper front to leave tall standing stubble in our paddocks. Our inputs are selected to provide a wide range of mineral nutrients to our plants in a plant available manner.

We brew our own biofertilisers which we add via liquid injection at sowing and also foliar sprays during growing stages. Any synthetic fertilisers we use are complexed with humic substances to increase availability and stability in the soil.

We monitor plant growth and health using sap tests, to determine the biofertiliser blend we need to apply in our foliar sprays.

We very rarely use fungicides or insecticides as healthy plants are less susceptible to pests and disease. While we still use herbicides, we buffer them with fulvic acid and vermiliquid to reduce the quantity needed as it makes it more efficient.

We don’t use synthetic nitrogen as we brew fish hydrolysate amino acids instead. We are the first farmers in this area trialling flax as it’s not recommended for our rainfall.
