What is safflower oil?

Safflower oil is a vegetable oil that is extracted from the seeds of the safflower plant (Carthamus tinctorius).

Safflower is an ideal crop for Australian conditions as it is a very hardy and broadly adaptable crop that does well in warm-season conditions. Currently safflower is grown in New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia.

Safflower oil is low in saturated fat and high in monounsaturated fats, particularly linoleic acid, which is an omega-6 fatty acid. It also contains small amounts of omega-3 fatty acids.

Safflower oil is known for its mild flavour and versatility in cooking. It has a light texture and a neutral taste, making it suitable for a wide range of culinary applications. The oil is often used in both traditional and modern cooking, including frying, baking, sautéing, and salad dressings.

Safflower oil has a high smoke point, typically ranging from 210°C to 232°C (410°F to 450°F). It has a higher smoke point than other commonly used oils, such as canola oil. This high smoke point makes it suitable for high-heat cooking methods like frying and deep-frying.

Other uses of Safflower are in cosmetics, skincare products, and as a carrier oil for essential oils. It is also sometimes used as a dietary supplement due to its potential health benefits.

As with any oil, it is important to use safflower oil in moderation as part of a balanced diet. It is also advisable to choose cold-pressed or unrefined safflower oil when possible, as it may retain more of its natural nutrients compared to highly refined versions.
