Date Posted:5 November 2025

Mashed potatoes are a timeless comfort food, and with the addition of flaxseed oil, this classic side dish gets a modern, nutritious upgrade.

Beloved for their versatility, mashed potatoes pair beautifully with roast meats, grilled sausages, bratwurst, turkey, beef stew, pot roast, Swedish meatballs, and more.

For extra flavor and richness, try topping them with gravy, herbs, or other favorite garnishes.

Ingredients

  • 1 kg potatoes (use Yukon Gold or Russe)
  • 100-250ml milk, warmed.
  • 50-150g of butter, unsalted or salted (depending on preference), melted or softened
  • 2-3 tablespoons cold-pressed flaxseed oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter or vegan butter alternative
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • Garlic (depending on preference)
  • Optional garnishes: Fresh chives, parsley, or a drizzle of extra flaxseed oil

Instructions

  • Peel and cut the potatoes into even chunks. Place them in a large pot of salted water and cook until fork-tender, about 15–20 minutes.
  • Drain well, then return the potatoes to the pot. Mash with a potato masher or fork until smooth.
  • While still hot, mix in the warmed milk or cream (if using), flaxseed oil, butter, salt, garlic and pepper. Stir until creamy and well combined.
  • Fold in parsley or chives if desired. Taste and adjust seasoning, then serve warm as a side dish.
