How to store Flaxseed Oil

Date Posted:11 June 2024

Flaxseed Oil is high in Omega 3 fatty acid (ALA), and is a delightful healthy addition to your diet.

It has a relatively short shelf life compared to some other oils and is sensitive to light, heat, and oxygen. Proper storage is essential to maintain the freshness and nutritional quality of the oil.

Also remember that flaxseed oil is best consumed in its raw form and should not ever be used for cooking.

Here are some tips on how to store Flaxseed Oil:

  • We recommend storing flaxseed oil in the refrigerator. The cool temperature helps slow down the oxidation process and extends the shelf life of the oil. Stoney Creek flaxseed oil will last in the refrigerator, unopened, for up to 2 years from production. Once opened, flaxseed oil is best to be consumed after about 1-2 months.
  • If you wish to purchase bulk Stoney Creek flaxseed oil, you can store unopened containers for up to 5 years in the freezer.
  • Stoney Creek flaxseed oil is only sold in either an opaque glass or plastic bottle or cans, lined with food grade epon lining. This protects the oil from light. Exposure to light can cause the oil to oxidise and degrade.
  • To prevent exposure to air please ensure that the lid is replaced well after each use to maintain the airtight seal.
  • We do not recommend decanting flaxseed oil from larger containers as the oil will be exposed to too much oxygen and will cause the oil to degrade very quickly.
  • Keep flaxseed oil away from heat. High temperatures can cause the oil to break down and become rancid.

By following these storage tips, you can help preserve the quality of your flaxseed oil and enjoy its nutritional benefits.
